Grammar – Class 4

Verbs

Verbs are words that express actions, events, or states. They are classified according to their meaning, form, and function.

Verbs can be classified in several ways. In grammar classes, we usually focus on these main categories:

1️    By meaning

  • Action verbsrun, build, write
  • State (stative) verbsbe, know, believe

2️    By form

  • Regular verbs – form the past with -ed (play → played)
  • Irregular verbs – change form in different ways (go → went → gone)

3️    By function in the sentence

  • Main (lexical) verbs – carry the main meaning (eat, study)
  • Auxiliary verbs – help form tenses and structures (be, have, do)

4️    By structure

  • Transitive verbs – need an object (read a book)
  • Intransitive verbs – do not need an object (sleep)

In this presentation, we focus on irregular verbs and how their forms change

Irregular verbs are organized by their endings to help you identify patterns and improve memorization.
